The beauty of living in most condos is that you can just lock the door and fly south to escape winter conditions. However, here are some things that you should do before leaving to ensure a return without trials or tribulations or an unpleasant interruption to your plans

When Snowbirds Fly the Coup

  1. Do not set your thermostat lower than 60 degrees.
  2. Empty the hot water heater and turn off the circuit breaker to it.
  3. Turn off the water supply where it first enters the home and drain outdoor spigots.
  4. Leave a key with a neighbor and advise the management company of same.
  5. Unplug non-essential appliances.
  6. Install sensors to alert of low temperatures or surface water.
  7. Enlist a neighbor or relative to check inside your home every week.
  8. Stop newspaper and mail delivery.
  9. Set some lights on timers for security purposes.
  10. Never leave your valuables, place them in a safety deposit box if you can not take them with you.
  11. Don’t announce to the entire world your home will be empty, by placing posts on Facebook and other social media.
  12. Notify your Property Manager of your winter contact information and the dates you will be away.
  13. Double-check to make sure that all windows and doors are locked.

In summary, a little pre-trip planning can prevent preempted vacation or a disastrous return.
